Brand Philosophy
A few brands I keep coming back to. Different industries, one shared philosophy: care about quality, get the fundamental experience right, and serve the many, so good things become part of everyone's everyday life.

Apple ↗ Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication
The line 'simplicity is the ultimate sophistication' appeared in the Apple II brochure in 1977, and it has been the company's compass ever since. Jobs insisted that deciding what not to do matters as much as deciding what to do: on his 1997 return he cut about 70% of the product line down to a two-by-two grid. Integration of hardware and software means the experience, not the spec sheet, is the product; the box, the unboxing, the weight of a hinge are all designed. Jony Ive described simplicity not as removing things but as understanding the essence of a product until order emerges. And 'a thousand songs in your pocket' showed that the philosophy extends to language: say the benefit, plainly.
MUJI 無印良品 ↗ Quality goods with no brand 无品牌的好东西
MUJI was born in 1980 as Seiyu's private label of just 40 products, created by Seiji Tsutsumi with designer Ikko Tanaka, an anti-brand launched at the very peak of Japan's logo worship. The name means 'no-brand quality goods', and its philosophy is a deliberate step back from 'this is best' to 'this is enough': not the thrill of desire, but the calm of reason. The method has never changed, selecting materials carefully, streamlining every process, and simplifying packaging, so the savings go into substance instead of decoration. From those 40 items it grew into an entire proposal for how to live, stationery, furniture, food, books, even hotels, all speaking in the same quiet voice. MUJI proves that restraint itself can be the strongest brand.
UNIQLO 优衣库 ↗ LifeWear: clothes as components of life LifeWear:衣服是生活的部件
Tadashi Yanai opened the first store in Hiroshima in 1984; the name comes from 'Unique Clothing Warehouse'. UNIQLO's core idea is anti-fashion: clothes are components, and the wearer, not the designer, completes the outfit, so it makes very few styles and sells each one at enormous scale. Technology hides inside basics, HEATTECH co-developed with Toray in 2003, then AIRism, and the 1,900-yen fleece of 1998 turned a premium fabric into a national staple. Collaborations with Jil Sander (+J) and Christophe Lemaire (Uniqlo U) put master-level design into everyday prices. The 2013 manifesto named it LifeWear: simple, high-quality everyday clothing, made for all.
IKEA 宜家 ↗ Democratic design for the many 民主设计,为大多数人
Ingvar Kamprad founded IKEA at 17 in Småland, a poor region of Sweden whose thrift became the company's DNA. Flat packaging, introduced in 1956, was the founding trade: customers contribute a little labor and transport, and prices drop dramatically. His 1976 essay 'The Testament of a Furniture Dealer' turned low price into a creed: designing an expensive desk is easy, designing a good desk at a price the many can afford takes the best designers. Democratic design has five inseparable elements, form, function, quality, sustainability and low price, and dropping any one of them is considered a failure. The showroom walk, the room sets, even the meatballs are part of one designed experience: a better everyday life for the many people.
The Albrecht brothers grew ALDI out of their mother's small grocery in Essen, splitting into ALDI Nord and Süd in the 1960s. The hard-discount philosophy is subtraction: carry only around 2,000 products where a supermarket carries tens of thousands, make about 90% of them private label, and pour the enormous simplicity dividend into lower prices and stricter quality control. No flashy marketing, plain stores, and in each category only one or two choices, the store has already done the choosing for you. Deep, long-term relationships with suppliers keep quality high at prices that feel impossible. ALDI entered China through Shanghai in 2019, bringing the same promise into the neighborhood: good quality, genuinely low prices.
Manner ↗ Specialty coffee at everyday prices
Han Yulong and Lu Jianxia opened Manner in 2015 as a 2-square-meter window on Nanyang Road in Shanghai. The trade-off is precise: cut the 'third space' entirely, keep the semi-automatic machines and baristas' handwork, and specialty-grade coffee lands at 15–25 yuan. Bring your own cup and 5 yuan comes off, an environmental gesture that is also a statement: coffee is a daily habit, not a ceremony. The tiny-store model produces extraordinary revenue per square meter, which is exactly what makes low prices sustainable rather than promotional. Manner's proof is simple and rare: cheap and well-crafted can coexist.
HEYTEA 喜茶 ↗ A cup of inspiration 灵感之茶
Nie Yunchen was 21 when he opened a tea shop in a back alley of Jiangmen, Guangdong in 2012; it became HEYTEA in 2016. He invented cheese tea there, and rebuilt street milk tea from scratch with real tea, real milk and real fruit, at a time when the category ran on powder. Growth came almost without advertising: the product and the queues did the talking, and store design plus endless collaborations turned a tea shop into a carrier of brand aesthetics. In 2022 it cut prices below 30 yuan and opened partnership stores, moving from inspiration for the few to a daily cup for the many. HEYTEA's lesson: redefine the quality floor of a category, and the category follows you.
